There’s no getting away from it, the end of summer is upon us and Autumn is on it’s way. That means that the nights are getting darker and we need to make sure we’re safe and seen whilst out running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here are a few handy tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wear reflective clothing – wear a high viz top, jacket or vest means that you can be spotted more easily. If you’re wearing layers make sure that each item is high viz if you need to remove one.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

Use lights – there are a variety of lights on the market. Head torches, chest torches and even bands worn around the arms are popular in our groups. Make sure you charge them up or replace batteries regularly.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

Change your routes – a number of groups have a variety of routes that are different from the summer sessions. Check if your route is well lit, run against the traffic and you’ll be able to spot potential hazards easier. <\/li>
Update your risk assessments to reflect the changes and ensure your group knows the route each session.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

Tell someone where you’re going – if you’re not running in a group let a friend or family member know where you’re going and how long you expect to be. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

Take your phone – a good idea in general in case of emergencies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

Ditch the headphones – running with music or even your favourite Run Wales podcast can be distracting, if you really can’t bear not to be plugged in try running with just one earbud and a low volume.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
