The cold, dark, and often wet conditions can seem daunting. But the social running community in Wales has come together, with expert tips from Run Wales, Welsh Athletics, and our Run Wales groups, to share how you can keep running safely and confidently this winter. Here&#8217;s how to maintain your motivation, stay safe, and keep pounding the pavements, trails, and hills all season long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Join a Group or Buddy Up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, as the nation\u2019s greatest advocate for social running, we\u2019re going to recommend that you run with other people!&nbsp; Running in winter can feel less appealing, but joining a local running group can boost motivation and keep you committed. If something happens, having others around can make it easier to get help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even if you run in a group, the following tips and suggestions are all key to ensuring that you are taking responsibility for your own wellbeing as well as reducing the risk to those around you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/social-running\/group-running\/find-a-group\/?location=Wales%20UK&amp;radius=100\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/social-running\/group-running\/find-a-group\/?location=Wales%20UK&amp;radius=100\">Run Wales Group Finder<\/a> online to find local running groups across Wales offering regular group runs, and winter is a great time to join in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brighten Up: Wear Reflective and Bright Gear<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visibility is crucial when running in low light. If you\u2019re running near traffic, this could be the key to staying safe.&nbsp; Research shows that wearing the right colour kit can change the distance at which you can be seen from 1.2 metres in dark clothing right up to 152 metres if you have something reflective on you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p>It\u2019s not just on the roads that bright and reflective equipment are needed.&nbsp; If you enjoy the trails and your running takes you off into the forests, hills, and mountains, you\u2019re probably already aware that it is crucial that you can be easily spotted should things go wrong and you need assistance, so keep visible throughout your winter running.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/rhoose-runners2-crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"659\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/rhoose-runners2-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/rhoose-runners2-crop.jpg 659w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/rhoose-runners2-crop-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><strong>Light Your Way with a Head or Chest Torch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re frequently out in the early morning or late evening, a good-quality running head or body-worn torch can be a lifesaver, quite literally.&nbsp; If you don\u2019t like wearing a head torch (a hat or buff worn under the strap can make it more comfortable), there are plenty of body or chest torches to choose from too.&nbsp; Both styles can also be found with a red light that shines behind you so you can be seen from both directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are other battery powered lights that can help keep you visible, such as lightweight ones worn around ankles or attached to shoes.&nbsp; Some runners opt to use small, easily detachable bike lights clipped to their packs for some additional safety, especially if their body-worn torch doesn\u2019t have a red rear light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A head torch not only lights up the path for you but also makes you visible to others,&#8221; adds Josie. &#8220;If you run on trails or in rural areas with minimal lighting, a wearable light is a must-have.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Screenshot-2024-11-20-113242.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"499\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Screenshot-2024-11-20-113242.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Screenshot-2024-11-20-113242.jpg 499w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Screenshot-2024-11-20-113242-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Screenshot-2024-11-20-113242-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wearable torches are available in a variety of intensities, so choose one that\u2019s comfortable and bright enough to handle the paths or trails you run on most often, but remember to position them so as not to blind other people!&nbsp; Also, keep your batteries well charged or take some spares if you\u2019re heading out for a long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plan Your Route Wisely<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Staying safe isn\u2019t just about your gear; it\u2019s also about where you choose to run. Even if you\u2019re familiar with your route, be mindful of isolated or poorly lit areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/campionschampions\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"554\" src=\"http:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Run-group-2-1-1024x554.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16979\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Run-group-2-1-1024x554.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Run-group-2-1-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Run-group-2-1-768x415.jpg 768w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/Run-group-2-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/campionschampions\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/campionschampions\/\">Campions Champions<\/a> prove that darkness is no barrier to success if suitable locations and routes can be used<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p>&#8220;Stick to well-lit and well-used streets whenever possible,\u201d suggests Gill Middlemass, a Run Leader with <a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/clwb-run-wales\/partnership\/\">Clwb Run Wales Partner Group<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/mon-milers\/\">M\u00f4n Milers<\/a>. &#8220;Parks, alleys, or uneven terrains can be risky in low light\u2014especially if you\u2019re unfamiliar with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choosing routes that are busy, with streetlights and pavements, provides an extra layer of safety and assurance.&nbsp; If you run with a social running group, your Run Leader or Coach might have upskilled by completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/run-leaders\/rl-dvpt\/lirf-to-cirf#fhort\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/run-leaders\/rl-dvpt\/lirf-to-cirf#fhort\">Fell, Hill, Off-Road and Trail Module<\/a>, which will help them identify and minimise hazards, included those caused by poor light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Carry Your Phone<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some of us enjoy switching off completely during a run, carrying a phone is a sensible choice when running in the dark.  Not only does your phone provide a means of communication, but there are also plenty of Apps available to share your location with a friend or family member in real time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>&#8220;A lightweight, sweat-wicking phone holder is a convenient way to keep your phone safe,&#8221; says Katie Kenward Gibbs, Run Leader and Co-Founder of the Run Wales Group of the Year 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/therunningsocial\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/therunningsocial\/\">The Running Social<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you prefer a hands-free option, there are \u2018barely there\u2019 waist belts for those who like the minimal option for the bare essentials, or you could use a reflective waist belt and include your first-aid kit too.&nbsp; If you are going out for longer try a hydration vest or backpack, which also lets you carry water and other emergency items such as spare clothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/kit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"860\" height=\"860\" src=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/kit.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/kit.jpg 860w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/kit-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/kit-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/kit-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In case of an emergency, having a phone with plenty of battery power ensures you can get help quickly.&nbsp; Consider what Apps might also help you direct someone to your aid if necessary \u2013 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/what3words.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/what3words.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">What3Words<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk\/os-locate-faq\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk\/os-locate-faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OS Locate<\/a> App can be used to help pinpoint your exact location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Run Against the Traffic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running against traffic lets you stay aware of any approaching cars, bikes, or other road users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Facing the traffic allows you to spot headlights early and react if needed,&#8221; advises Jon Hussey, Run Leader for <a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/rhoose-runners\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/groups\/rhoose-runners\/\">Rhoose Runners<\/a> and Run Wales Run Leader of the Year 2023. &#8220;Running with the flow of traffic, especially in low light, reduces your ability to see potential hazards.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This small adjustment can make a big difference to your safety on busy or narrow roads.&nbsp; Even if you are running on a pavement, being able to see what is heading towards you can buy you time to react should something unexpected occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p><strong>Slow Down and Be Cautious<\/strong> <strong>or Go Somewhere Safe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/PXL_20241112_200955886.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/PXL_20241112_200955886-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/PXL_20241112_200955886-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/PXL_20241112_200955886-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/PXL_20241112_200955886-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/irun.wales\/app\/uploads\/PXL_20241112_200955886.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>An empty car park becomes a training ground<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<p>It\u2019s tempting to keep up the pace, but wet, uneven, or unfamiliar paths can be treacherous in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Be cautious around curbs, uneven pavements and pedestrian barriers, which can be hard to spot in dim light,&#8221; Gill advises.  &#8220;If you\u2019re unsure of the terrain, slow down.  Even paths you have run a hundred times may have a slip or trip hazard that wasn&#8217;t there the last time you were there.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter isn\u2019t necessarily the best season for speed goals, so consider treating it as a time to build endurance and focus on safe, steady runs, or be creative about finding a safe space.
