A determined group of 100 novice female runners have been given free spaces to October\u2019s sold-out Cardiff Half to help them take their first steps towards healthier lifestyles as part of the #RunWales100.<\/p>\n

The ladies were brought together last weekend in Cardiff and put at their ease by Hannah Phillips, Run Wales activator and Stand up comedienne, who shared the hilarious story of her first steps into the world of running, and her top tips for training.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wore a balaclava the first time I went running, it was in the dark, and the police pulled me over!\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The club is being fronted by broadcaster and ultra-endurance athlete Lowri Morgan, who spoke at the event about the barriers she\u2019s faced, how mental strength and planning and organisation has helped her reach her training goals. She also touched on \u2018Mum Guilt\u2019 and how she manages fitting training around family life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are ordinary people who can do extraordinary things,\u201d Lowri said in her address of the group. \u201cIt\u2019s an absolute honour to be a part of the Run Wales 100 and to meet 100 inspirational & fabulous ladies who\u2019ll be running the Cardiff Half Marathon for the first time. I\u2019m looking forward to going on this emotional journey with every single one of them.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Women\u2019s Health magazine are lending their support by sponsoring the Run Wales 100 initiative, providing the ladies with a bespoke training t-shirt, race day t-shirt and training support. Claire Sanderson, Editor of Women\u2019s Health magazine spoke about her incredibly inspiring experiences, and how exercise has been her medicine to manage her mental health.<\/p>\n

Former Alfie\u2019s Angels Patricia Rees and Claire Tapper, who went from the sofa to 13.1 miles in 2016 and never looked back, shared their recollections of the whole experience. Both have gone on to run marathons and become qualified run leaders who now love nurturing new runners along their journey.<\/p>\n

Once the ladies were fired up, they embarked on a 5K training run in nearby Pontcanna Fields to ease them into their preparation for race day, which is now less than 11 weeks away. The progress of the #RunWales100 will be featured on the BBC\u2019s coverage of the event to shine a light on some of the inspiring journeys the first-time participants have had to go on just to make it to the start-line outside Cardiff Castle.<\/p>\n

Gemma, Group leader of Porth Eirias runners<\/a> who\u2019d travelled down from North Wales for the event, was fired up after the event:<\/p>\n

\u201cI love what I do as a run leader. I did my first half marathon last year in Cardiff just like you. I was really ill a few years ago and was struggling to walk let alone run and I may not be the fastest by any stretch of the imagination I am a plodder but I keep on going!\u00a0Bring on the training and we are even more excited for the day now!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The ladies were instantly bonding and sharing stories, and were quick to get on social media and offer support and encouragement to each other:<\/p>\n

The group will meet again in September to step up their preparations before the big day on October 6.
