Nearly Half of Wales’ Schools Sign Up for The Daily Mile

The Daily Mile is a transformative initiative where children run, jog, wheel or walk for fifteen minutes within the school day. Inclusivity and accessibility has always been at the heart of The Daily Mile – getting young people involved regardless of ability.

It improves not only the children’s fitness, but also their concentration levels, mood, behaviour and general wellbeing making them fitter, healthier, and more able to concentrate in the classroom. 19,500 schools and nurseries across the world are taking part!

As Run Wales Young Person’s Physical Activity Officer, Cath is promoting The Daily Mile in schools across Wales. Please get in touch for help and advice with The Daily Mile: Cath.bingham@runwales.org.uk

The Chief Medical Officer states that children and young people (5-18 years) should partake in at least 60mins of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) daily. They should take part in a variety of activities that develop movement skills and strengthen muscles and bones, and reduce the time spent sitting! We encourage schools to sign up to The Daily Mile to support this requirement and to improve the wellbeing of future generations.

The Daily Mile is backed by research showing that the programme positively affects the mental and physical health of children and just as importantly, it’s backed by teachers. Teachers face enough pressure on their time and that’s why The Daily Mile is designed to be flexible and adaptable; it’s a programme developed by a teacher! The Daily Mile is another opportunity for schools to embed physical activity in their day in a way that can promote long term behaviour change in children.

46% of primary and SEN schools across Wales already partake in The Daily Mile and have witnessed first-hand the benefits to both pupils and staff! As the key delivery partner for the Daily Mile in Wales, Welsh Athletics and Run Wales are on a mission to increase participation in The Daily Mile across Wales.
