This week’s parkrun of the week is the Aberystwyth parkrun, which takes place on Plascrug Avenue, Aberystwyth at 9a.m every Saturday morning. The Aberystwyth parkrun recently surpassed the 300-event mark and was the fourth parkrun event to start in Wales back in 2012!
Last Saturday, 26th May, the Aberystwyth parkrun smashed its record attendance figures with 141 parkrunners participating, including a number of Aberystwyth University Harriers who came down for one final parkrun to finish the term in style. In addition, there were many first-time parkrunners at Plascrug Avenue last weekend, recording big personal best times over the flat and fast 5k course.
In addition, back in February the Aberystwyth parkrun received a celebrity visit from former England international athlete Steve Tunstall! For those of you wondering about Steve’s pedigree as a runner, he once ran a 5k in 13:39 and a 10k in 28:38!
The Aberystwyth parkrun offers a tree-lined and sheltered, flat and fast course that runs up and down Plascrug Avenue, ideally located very close to Aberystwyth town centre. The course begins with an out and back on the wide middle path through Plascrug park, followed by 3 anticlockwise laps on the outer paths, then onto the middle path again for the finish. The event would not be able to take place every Saturday morning if it wasn’t for the hard working and dedicated group of parkrun volunteers who help set up and take down the course every weekend, as well as helping to collate results at the finish line. In addition, parkrunners, volunteers and spectators often meet for a post-run coffee at Aberystwyth’s Rugby Club which is very near to the finish line of the event.
