Run Wales

Countdown to the Biggest Walking Weekend in parkrun History!

To celebrate the relaunch of parkwalk, this weekend, parkrun is aiming for the biggest turnout of parkwalkers in history—what a fantastic opportunity for social running groups to get involved!

With over 50 parkrun events across Wales, almost half of which will also be hosting a 5k Your Way Move Against Cancer group this weekend, it’s the perfect chance to invite anyone in your circle to join the fun and experience the joy of being part of a supportive, non-competitive community.

Why get involved?

parkwalk is a great addition to your social running group’s regular activities. Here’s how it can benefit your group while complementing your usual routine:

1. Strengthens Group Bonding

Walking together in a relaxed setting creates opportunities for your group members to chat and connect without the pressure of speed. This social aspect deepens friendships, creating stronger bonds within the group. parkwalk is a fun, laid-back option for those who want to enjoy each other’s company in a different way, outside of your regular runs.

2. Inclusive for All Members

Not everyone in your running group may be up for running every week. Whether due to injury, fitness levels, or just needing a change of pace, parkwalk provides an inclusive option that lets everyone take part. It’s a great way to keep your group together and ensure that no one is left out, even on days when running might not feel right.

3. Promotes Consistency and Routine

While parkwalk is an additional event, it provides a fun, consistent weekly activity to complement your regular runs. Having this additional event on the weekend creates more opportunities to stay active, and it gives your group another chance to meet and keep the social momentum going.

4. Boosts Mental Well-being Together

The benefits of walking outdoors with others go beyond physical fitness—it’s fantastic for mental health. Whether it’s the calming effect of nature, the positive impact of light exercise, or simply spending time with friends, parkwalk gives your group a chance to relax, recharge, and connect. It’s the perfect way to balance the intensity of your usual workouts with something that focuses on well-being.

5. Encourages Motivation Without Pressure

parkwalk is a low-pressure, no-competition event, which makes it easier for everyone in your group to stay motivated. It’s a fun way to stay active without the need for speed or performance—just showing up and being part of the event is a win! For members who may not feel up to running, parkwalk offers an enjoyable, pressure-free alternative.

6. Introduces New Members to Your Group

Since parkwalk is open to everyone, it’s a great way to invite potential new members to experience your social running group in a low-pressure environment. It’s an easy way to introduce newcomers to your community and give them a taste of what your group is all about. If they enjoy parkwalk, they may be more likely to join your regular runs or other group activities.

Did you know there are volunteer roles where you can walk too?

It’s a great way to feel more connected to your local community, provides a sense of accomplishment but also helping others leaving with a feeling of pride and fulfilment.

Fancy giving a go?

In conclusion, parkrun and parkwalk are fantastic additions to your group’s regular activities. They offer an inclusive, supportive, and fun way to stay active together, while providing an alternative to your usual running routine. It’s all about variety, consistency, and keeping the spirit of social connection alive in your group.
