Supporting Mental Health in Wales with SilverCloud

At Welsh Athletics and Run Wales, we are dedicated to supporting the mental well-being of our running community. Through our partnership with Mind Cymru, we continue to train Mental Health Champions in clubs and groups across Wales, equipping them with the skills to spot, support, and signpost members to valuable resources.

One such resource that we believe everyone in Wales should be aware of is SilverCloud, a free online mental health support service available through NHS Wales – no GP referral needed!

What is SilverCloud?

SilverCloud is an online platform providing guided self-help programmes designed to help individuals manage mild-to-moderate mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, stress, and sleep difficulties. The programmes are based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps you challenge negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping strategies.

How Does it Work?

Signing up for SilverCloud is simple, and you can access it anytime, anywhere, from your mobile, tablet, or computer. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Sign up online at nhswales.silvercloudhealth.com/signup.
  2. Choose your programme from a range of interactive mental health and wellbeing options.
  3. Complete the programme over 12 weeks, working at your own pace, with recommended use of 15-20 minutes, three to four times per week.
  4. Receive fortnightly feedback from an NHS-trained SilverCloud Supporter, who will monitor your progress and provide guidance.

Who Can Access SilverCloud?

SilverCloud is available for:

  • Anyone aged 16+ experiencing mild to moderate mental health concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, or stress).
  • Those registered with a GP in Wales or residing in Wales.
  • Individuals who are not receiving secondary or tertiary mental health services (e.g., under the care of a psychiatrist or psychologist).

What Support Will I Receive?

When you sign up, you will be allocated a SilverCloud Supporter – an NHS professional trained to provide online mental health support. Your Supporter will:

  • Review your progress and send you written feedback every two weeks.
  • Provide guidance and advice based on your questionnaire responses and comments.
  • Communicate with you through the online messaging system within the SilverCloud platform (no phone or face-to-face contact required).
