Run for Fun at Ruthin Memorial Playing Fields

When the Run Wales Social Running Celebration Relay started last July, there were 46 parkrun events in Wales. Over 12 months later, we are into the final five parkruns and the last few in North Wales.  This week saw the well-travelled Bryn the Baton in the hands of the Denbigh Harriers and their Run for Fun group to take it round the course at the Ruthin-based parkrun‘s 59th event, just after a year since its original inception.

The Celebration relay provides all Run Wales registered groups with a tremendous opportunity to showcase their group, sharing information about their activities and encouraging more people to participate in social running outside of their regular weekly parkrun.  We are encouraging groups to support their local parkrun by offering to volunteer as well as run, jog or walk at the relay events.

44/48: Celebration Relay Run ReportRuthin Memorial Playing Fields parkrun

Although for the second successive weekend chances of bright sunshine remained low, spirits remained high among runners as they turned out for the 59th edition of Ruthin Memorial Playing Fields parkrun where nearly half of the 105 finishers were first timers to the event!

The completely flat parkrun course follows pleasant wide tarmac paths around the playing fields and is made up by three loops in total, so watch out for the turns!

Run for fun is a biannual course put on by the Denbigh Harriers for individuals starting out on their running journey, working with run co-ordinator Caroline Parry as they make their way through a ten week programme. The group usually meets on a Monday night at 6:30pm.

This week, the group’s members were on the third week of their ten week program. They ran and walked the course, passing the baton between themselves as they progressed onwards! It’s worth noting that Ruthin Memorial Playing Fields parkrun follows a really fun route as you can interact with and wave at other participants as you go by.

Dawn from the Run for Fun group reported that all the members had great fun and the event was a real confidence-booster!

This week 105 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 40 were first timers. Representatives of 13 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 14 volunteers:

Lesley PYMM • Catherine Tudor JONES • Hazel PARRY • Sally SMITH • Andrea BROCKMEYER • Melody LOWE • Grace MACNAB • Manon WILKINSON • Katie MANN • Eirian COMMINS • Steve LOWE • Paul COMMINS • Christopher GOUGH • Lowri SMITH

Today’s full results and a complete event history can be found on the Ruthin Memorial Playing Fields parkrun Results Page.

Ruthin Memorial Playing Fields parkrun started on 28th May 2022. Since then 2,097 participants have completed 5,042 parkruns covering a total distance of 25,210 km, including 848 new Personal Bests. A total of 139 individuals have volunteered 933 times.

After this week, The Run for Fun Group hand over the Celebration Relay baton as it heads towards the coast in the direction of Dolgellau parkrun! We look forward to hearing how it goes on Saturday!
