Group of the Month – August 2018

Llanelli AC / DW Running Group

Our Group of the Month for August is the Llanelli AC / DW Running Group – who started up on the 14th May with the hope of encouraging new runners and those looking to progress.

Their sessions are generally split into small groups, from complete beginners doing the Couch to 5k programme to people running regular parkruns between 40 and 45 minutes who don’t want to join an athletics club, and runners doing parkruns in 30 to 35mins. Each of these groups are well supported by Run Leader, Rob Campion, and other regular Llanelli AAC club runners.

The group regularly get 20 to 30 runners showing up every week with new members coming along and looking to get into running – joining the Couch to 5k programme. Run leader, Rob Campion commented “Many runners from our group who regularly do parkruns have seen their times improve since being with us by 2 to 5 minutes, and from the first session where they were nervous to even get out of the car and take the first step, have now signed up as members of Llanelli AAC. Not only do they enjoy socialising and running, they’ve already enjoyed a few tough 10k races (Sospan 10k, Ammanford 10k, Tenby 10k and Barry Island 10k) with the Cardiff Half Marathon the main goal for many in October.”

Regular members of the group, Vicki and Stuart commented “We started running at Parkruns in Llanelli in January and wanted to make improvements to our running times and technique. Neither of us had the knowledge or discipline to do this. We would start our own training runs but call it a day a minute or two in. Both very anxious but determined, we attended the Monday night running group set up by Llanelli Athletics Club and we haven’t looked back since. Rob and the team have welcomed us from day one and given us the encouragement and support to continue our running journey. We really can’t thank them enough for giving up their time and the effort they put in for us. We started running to improve our health and fitness and to set a good example to our daughter. With the guidance of Llanelli Athletics Club we feel that we are on our way to achieving this and so much more.”

Members of the Llanelli AC / DW Running group have been kind enough to share their running experiences with us here at Run Wales – stay tuned for their stories on #WhyIRun over the coming days.
