Social Runners Shine at the 2024 Conwy Half Marathon

The 2024 Conwy Half Marathon delivered a breathtaking blend of athletic challenge and camaraderie, as nearly 3,000 runners gathered under the shadow of the 700-year-old Conwy Castle on Sunday. Now in its 15th year, this iconic event continues to captivate participants with its scenic route, recognised as one of the top five most picturesque half marathons in the UK by Runners World readers.

With a course that begins and ends on the historic bridge near Conwy Quayside, the route takes runners through Deganwy and Llandudno’s West Shore before briefly dropping down past Llandudno pier, marking the start of the arduous climb around the dramatic Great Orme. Participants were treated to stunning views of the Isle of Anglesey, Puffin Island, and the North Wales coastline. Whilst the weather added a layer of challenge with windy, squally conditions at the summit, it did little to dampen spirits.

A Day for Local Social Running Communities

The race saw strong participation from local Run Wales registered running groups, including Amlwch Arrows, Black Cloak Runners, Dwygy Dashers, Mon Milers, and our very own virtual running club, Clwb Run Wales. However, Porth Eirias Runners stood out, not just for their 17-strong contingent of runners but also for their significant volunteer presence.

Catrin Williams, who oversees the club’s volunteer efforts, was stationed at West Shore, while Barry Palmer led 10 volunteers at the “Rest and Be Thankful” water station on the Great Orme.

Karen Bradburn managed a team of seven members at the baggage drop. Starting their day as early as 7:30 AM, the volunteers echoed a shared sentiment: they relished the opportunity to support the event and were eager to return next year.

Personal Achievements and Club Pride

For some runners, the Conwy Half Marathon marked significant milestones. Four club members—Mark Evans, Lona Gavins, Zara Parry, and Dan Williams—completed the final leg of the 2024 Four Castle Series, proudly showcasing their medals at the finish line.

Two of the most inspiring stories came from Elwyn Gruffydd and Angharad Jones, who joined Porth Eirias Runners this year through its Couch to 5K program. Emboldened by their progress, they decided to tackle their first half marathon at Conwy, earning well-deserved congratulations from their club and fellow runners.

A Tradition of Encouragement

Paula Jones, one of Porth Eirias Runners’ leaders, highlighted the inclusive and celebratory spirit of the event.

“The Conwy Half Marathon is a staple on our calendar, and we always encourage our newest members to take part—whether running or volunteering. It’s wonderful to see so many of our members embracing the race-day experience. All in all, it was a fantastic day for everyone involved.”

A Race to Remember

As the runners crossed the finish line and celebrated their personal bests, firsts, and triumphs, the 2024 Conwy Half Marathon solidified its reputation as both a challenging race and a joyous community event. From seasoned athletes to enthusiastic newcomers, the day showcased the vibrant running spirit of North Wales.

With its breathtaking route, historic backdrop, and strong sense of community, the Conwy Half Marathon continues to inspire runners and volunteers alike, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the 2025 edition.
